Give people the best training you can, and give them constant support whilst they’re carrying it out. We put a lot of work into how we would attract people to work for us, how we’d recruit them, and then how we’d induct them. We put a lot of effort into that so as soon as new employees hit the shop floor, they’re up to speed.
People need to feel as though they can talk to all the levels of management, and they need to feel involved in the company. There needs to be respect at all levels. We asked people regularly, “What are the two things that you would change in the store that would affect the customer?” and “What are the two things that would benefit you, working for us?”
