The idea to go into party supplies came from personal experience as when I got married I struggled to find favour boxes or sugared almonds. Also when I organized a party for one of my two sons I couldn’t find Thomas the Tank Engine themed products for it.
I did market research by asking friends and family and they asked their friends and work colleagues with children and there was a demand. I also spoke to people who had registered to get married at the Civic Centre and In Biz helped me with my market research.
My husband and children were a great support and I used our savings and the redundancy money to set up Sue Magoos, Party Supplies and Balloon Decoration for every occasion. I found premises in Frederick Street, Sunderland and opened in August 2007. I initially started with party supplies and trained in balloon decoration after a request from a customer which has definitely been worthwhile.
The name Sue Magoos is what my niece calls me and I thought as it’s a bit of s silly nickname with a good ring to it, it was right for a party themed business.
