I never really questioned my ability to do things, I just got stuck in and had a go. In 1978 I asked my employer what his plans were for me, and he told me I was a second rate welder and that’s all I’d ever be. I spent my next holiday going round all the local quarries and coal sites asking if I started my own business, would they give me an opportunity. They all said yes, and it all snowballed from there. We’ve rapidly expanded to a global business with factories from Cramlington to China.
We’ve faced many challenges along the way, including having to sell our assets to keep the business alive, despite everyone telling us to just ‘bump the business’. It’s the challenges that frighten most people off, but they’re only as hard as you think they’re going to be. If you think you can, you can.
