I suspect, deep down, I’ve always wanted my own business, even if sometimes I’ve been in denial about it! The opportunity arose unexpectedly and...

my background>

" I’ve been an optician for fifteen years and I generally worked for large organisations. After having two children I went part time and that’s when it really started to get difficult. I was getting increasingly frustrated by the fact that I was struggling to juggle the ever changing demands made by my employer whilst trying to care for my two children. I needed to feel that I was back in control of my life again. The experience with my past employer meant that I’d lost a lot of confidence in my own ability. But deep-down I knew that I was capable, and I owe it to my children to ensure that my job worked around them and their needs and not the other way around. That’s when S.Walton Eyecare was born. "

why i want to win>

" I feel proud of myself and my business and I’ve come a long way via a steep learning curve. I’ve learned a lot, achieved a lot, and grafted a lot for it all. I took an opportunity which came out of the left field, and some might say at an inappropriate time- my children were 3 and 1 at the time- but I do think that being an entrepreneur has something to do with ‘seizing the day’, so I went for it. I still overcome obstacles every day but I’ve seen the benefit of surrounding myself with the right people and the right staff. I feel that what I’ve achieved so far shows that, whilst there is adversity out there, it can be done. There’s still a long way to go but I do feel that I’ve made a success out of my business. Also, if I can pass on any advice to people in my situation that would be great. I do feel that people like me, mothers with small children, are an untapped resource. There’s a huge amount of potential out there. There are definitely benefits in the prize which will allow me to take my business to that next level, but I feel that if I won, I could pass on my own ‘pearls of wisdom’ to other people. "

why i'm sure i'll suceed>

" With my self belief, determination, a good idea and a sound and thorough business plan. When times are quiet I just keeptrying new ideas and look at other avenues to bring in new business. So far, touch wood, it seems to be working. In S.Walton Eyecare, there is a real dedication to customer service both from myself and my excellent staff, whilst still delivering very reasonable prices. We’re growing our patient base largely on direct recommendation; many, many people have referred their friends and family to us which in itself is a very satisfying compliment. "
