I was about fifteen when I knew I wanted to run my own business. I’m not sure why – it’s just something I always wanted to do. I came up with hundreds of ideas for both products and services. When I couldn’t sleep, I’d get out of bed and sit down with a piece of paper and brainstorm different ideas.
I’m quite creative in a sense, I don’t feel I’m an academic person, but more hands on. I chose to do ‘A’ levels in business, information technology and design technology as those were the subjects I felt I had the most talent in, and enjoyed the most.
I decided to carry on my education and chose a degree in Marketing Management at Newcastle University, as I felt it would give me the knowledge to help me set up in business and the time and tools to work out how I would start my business life. I’ve looked at various graduate jobs but the path for me seems to be embedded in business, which is were my passion lies.

I entered the competition more for self motivation. I really do believe in myself. Also, I’m very competitive and I love the buzz of competitions. But I didn’t enter for the recognition of winning although the exposure will help to keep driving the business forward.
I’ve been inspired by many entrepreneurs, and it is great to gain knowledge from more experienced entrepreneurs and find out what they went through to reach where they are, but I’m also very keen to inspire a new generation coming through. For me its both sides of the coin really.

I think my business will succeed because of its originality. That’s the main selling point about it – customizing and designing your own footwear on the internet is a novel idea.
I also think it will succeed because I’m really driving it. I’m very motivated and determined, I have done my market research and planned it all thoroughly. Since starting the business I have also been part of a second business making and selling crepes at university. This has given me a lot of insight about working in a team which will be great experience when I start to expand my footwear business.

Matt visited the Careers Centre November 2007 to discuss his business idea and how to get started, taking all advice onboard and with 100% dedication, he has worked hard to establish his business over the last 12 months, He received a grants which contributed towards essential items of equipment he needed to get the business started. Matthew has committed a huge amount of time to his business idea and he is now starting to see the rewards, it is fantastic to hear he has a number of high street retailers wanting to buy from him and that his idea is coming to fruition. He is an inspiration to other students thinking about starting their own business.

Its Wednesday afternoon, and in between running a business and revising for an Economics exam on Tomorrow, Ive found a little bit of time to gather my thoughts for this competition.
Its amazing to be selected as one of the finalists! I am, as I'm sure every other finalist is, very excited about what can be gained from this competition. I found out about this the day after I won an award for my business plan through Newcastle University! So already being on a high after that and then finding out about this, its safe to say I was smiling!
The thing I love the most is reading peoples profiles and really seeing the passion and belief everyone has for their business, for me that's definatley a necessity if your going to make a business a success.
I have to congradulate The Entrepreneurs forum, they are doing great things with this Challenge to help promote entrepreneurship in the North East while also helping boost the profile of many local businesses, its quality.
Ok, Sun is shining and ive got to get a dinner suit for the event tomorrow! Then its back to the books! 'i love exams!*!?'
