Michael Kelly's story
My idea came from local boutiques around Middlesbrough telling me that there was no one who could provide them with high quality fashion photography for their businesses.
I had just finished university, and after raking up quite a bit of debt I decided that the best and quickest way to clear them was to start my own business and give people the service they had been missing.
I wanted to become a world renowned photographer and creative advertising agency, and I set about developing Construct Photographic with the support of my university, NESTA and the Prince’s Trust.
The business is really starting to progress, and I’m now starting to reach my goal especially as I’m working with people I really want to work with. My biggest success so far has been working with the girls from Channel 4’s ‘Shipwrecked’ last summer.
Finance and cash flow are two of my biggest hurdles. I’ve overcome them by working twice as hard to find work and make money, but I think I probably should have planned my finances better in the beginning. You can never plan enough when you’re first starting out!
I work all the hours I can find, and to be honest I don’t end up having much of a social life these days. But I know it’ll be worth it in the long run.
It takes dedication and passion to become a successful entrepreneur, so my advice would be to get out there and let everyone know who you are.
